Another snow day project...felt board storytelling. As you might be able to sense from the things I cut out, I'm looking forward to spring. Green trees, flowers, bunnies, and butterflies. The snow has been fun but we're expecting our fourth big snow storm in two months. This town has seen more snow in 8 weeks then it has in ten years put together. (I'm a little cranky from the lack of sleep due to the back aches from shoveling snow - despite my sour attitude we really did have a lot of fun sledding in our back yard today)
I remember felt boards from Sunday school when I was a kid and frankly I wasn't that into them, but for Jack's age (19 months) he quite enjoys it. He loved the birds and carried them around all morning. I love watching his imagination working as he removes the objects, gives them life, and replaces them on the board creating his own story. Apparently the birds are in love because they were kissing and then flew into their nest in the tree to take a nap. We have lots of birds in our yard and mommy thoroughly encourages them with all her bird feeders hanging everywhere. We watch them everyday eating lunch while we do the same at the dining table.
I used a foam board that I picked up at Michaels forever ago and had sitting my craft closet, wrapped wool felt around it and stapled it to the back. Cut out all the critters and plant life, etc. and there you have it. Simple and fast and lots of fun for the kiddo. I already had a mass of wool felt that I pick up here and there when I find colors that I like. I much prefer the wool felt over the acrylic. The acrylic tears easily not to mention it'll melt on your iron if your not careful...plus wool just feels and looks better.
I love the idea of this because I can always refresh it with new themes...given that I can cut them out properly :)
Rebecca this is SO adorable!! I'll have to try doing one with my kiddo-they would love it! How did you cut out everything so nice and neat?

Thanks! Lets just say that butterfly was my third attempt... what I discovered - fold fabric in half and cut. Some of them were freehand, some I used a fabric marker to outline my shape first, then cut. It helped to look at a picture first then cut - my brain & hands seemed to cooperate better that way. Have fun!
